Massey@Distance has investments in a trust under the Massey Foundation and there is $3000 to be awarded this year.

M@D SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS CLOSE ON 30th SEPTEMBER, 2020

Introduction

Each year, M@D considers the pool value for the year, and based on this, designs categories for awards, and assigns award amounts for winners and runners-up.

For 2020, there will be four categories, each with a $3000 first prize and 3 x $500 runner-up prizes, together with a 5th category, the annual Dierdre McOnie award, of $1000.

2020 Categories

Category 1: Research Benefiting Distance Students

(One first prize of $3000, two runner-up prizes of $500 each)

This is available for students undertaking postgraduate research in a topic of direct and specific benefit to Massey distance students. Researchers must have approval from supervisors for a research project, which may be in one of the following formats:

  • Doctoral Thesis or Dissertation
  • Masters Thesis of 90 or 120 Credits
  • Research Report of 60 Credits

Category 2: Overall Academic Merit

(One first prize of $3000, two runner-up prizes of $500 each)

This category is available for students who are excelling academically in their studies.

Category 3: Welfare

(One first prize of $3000, two runner-up prizes of $500 each)

This category will feature awards to students of merit whose studies are being adversely impacted by temporary, unexpected and verifiable financial duress

Category 4: Lecturers’ Choice

(One first prize of $3000, two runner-up prizes of $500 each)

Massey University academic staff in student-facing roles will be eligible to apply in this category, to nominate students of particular merit who they have been personally working with.

Category 5: Dierdre McOnie Award

(One sole prize of $1000)

This new category has been created as a bequest from the estate of a grateful past distance student, Dierdre McOnie. To be eligible for this category, you need to be female, 35 or over, and show consistently strong scholastic merit along with associated hardship factors.

The committee will request written submissions of no more than 250 words from applicants that will be considered by the selection panel.An award of $1000 will be made to the successful applicant in this category.


To be eligible for one of the M@D scholarships, you need to fit the following criteria:

  1. Be currently enrolled as a distance student.
  2. Have at least half of your current year’s enrolment in distance paper offerings.
