March 2020 Newsletter - Special Edition


Massey@Distance welcomes all Massey students to our association and offers use of our online services to all students across Massey University. Our thoughts are with you all and our aim is to get everyone through this semester, the next, and on into the future.

Things have changed for everyone and that is going to have an impact on all of us right now. Please take extra steps, beyond the usual, to strengthen those mental health and wellness protective factors (see our M@D Wellness infographic for more details, or download it as a PDF file that you can print)- More tips to come through our M@D Wednesday Wellness promotion.

You may be feeling some anxiety at the moment. That’s ok! We are too and it’s a perfectly reasonable reaction. There are tried and tested techniques that you can use, to give you something practical to do and help you feel a little more in control of your anxiety.

The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise, for example, is utilised worldwide by counsellors and therapists. According to Rochester University, “This five-step exercise can be very helpful during periods of anxiety or panic by helping to ground you in the present when your mind is bouncing around between various anxious thoughts”:

If you are feeling overwhelmed there are plenty of helplines available for you to use. If you are not NZ-based, make sure to look up the helplines for your area and keep them somewhere handy.


Is the Uni going to look after my best interests?

Wednesday Wellness

A presentation by M@D committee members Jax Watt and Kelly Hall.

Jax is a certified lifekeeper and holds a BA: Major in Social Anthropology, Minor in Rehabilitation Studies. Currently doing an MA in Social Anthropology.

Kelly holds a BA (psych), PGCert of Rehabilitation, and PGDipArts (psych). Currently MA (psych).


#IsoDecorHouse Competition

Drop an image of your house be it super messy, super tidy or completely or somewhat decorated. The winner will be drawn at random at the end of each week. Prize will be chocolate, coffee, tea and a mini-sparkling wine.

    Are you struggling financially?

    If you are struggling financially as a result of the pandemic you can apply for a grant of up to $750 through Massey University and the Massey University Students Association. Tap here to apply for grant.

    International students

    Are thoughts are with you. We understand many of you have had your wages affected and you are not entitled to benefits in the country you are in. Please refer to the link to the grant listed above.




    The Distance Library book delivery service is now unavailable

    However, the Library has access to a huge number of electronic journal articles, and these are all still available. The Library also has access to a huge number of ebooks, and we are buying extra copies over this period – please make use of these too.

    Library staff are still available to help with finding information, or with any other questions you may have. We are available 8.30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday. To visit the library website please tap here.

    Health and counselling

    MU Student health and counselling is still available, but appointments will be by phone, Skype, Zoom or WeChat. We know this service is more important than ever and we encourage you to make use of it.

    Online study resources

    The Massey@Distance website has been designed specifically for MU students studying distance. Our study support section contains University resources specifically for online study at Massey. So all our resources are usable during this online period!
